Scotland to push tidal power forward

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Scotland is poised to be the world leader in tidal power technology.

According to the U.K. Financial Times, Scottish Power has revealed its plans for the largest tidal power project in the world.

On the coasts of Scotland and Northern Ireland 20 1-megawatt underwater power-generating turbines will be set up by Scottish Power Renewables. SPR is also proposing a manufacturing facility to export tidal turbines to other electricity utilities.

Nearly $200 million already has been invested for the project, which is estimated to have enough capacity to generate power for more than 40,000 households.

Though still a new energy technology, researchers believe the flow of tides can be used reliably to turn turbines for 23 hours a day.
