China readies new nuclear plant

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- China announced it will begin construction of a new nuclear plant soon.

China's State Nuclear Power Technology Corp. announced it will build the world's first nuclear plant using the AP1000 technologies at Sanmen Nuclear Power Project in the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang. Construction is set to begin in March 2009.

The first phase of the project is expected to be complete and in commercial operation in November 2013. By 2020, China's goal is to have 40 million kilowatts of installed nuclear capacity. The current capacity is about 8 million kilowatts.

China has 11 nuclear power reactors currently in operation, Xinhua news agency reported.
