NEW DELHI, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- India received a waiver from the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

The fast-developing country will now be permitted to develop its own nuclear industry and technology, the Hindustan Times reported.

The waiver is also part of India's plans to develop energy independence, Arundhati Ghose told the Hindustan Times. Ghose is an Indian diplomat who led a battle against the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

The waiver made India one of six nations that can buy nuclear merchandise and retain a nuclear arsenal.

India's democracy, non-proliferation record and indigenous nuclear program led to the waiver, and the country can now build further ties with other member nations, including the United States.
