Turbine delivered to Afghanistan

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Coalition forces delivered a 200-ton hydroelectric turbine to Afghanistan.

Troops from Britain and the United States helped to deliver the turbine to Taliban-occupied Helmand province earlier this week, The Guardian reported.

It took about 5,000 soldiers and $100 million to deliver the turbine across 100 miles of insurgent lands, but the turbine is expected to help provide clean and reliable power to local Afghans through a hydroelectric dam.

Engineers working on the project have said it will still be months before about 1.8 million people get power from the dam. It also will require security resources to safeguard against attacks.

Beside energy, the hydro project will help locals irrigate their crops.
