Putin vows Bushehr help for Iran

TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday his country will complete work on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant.

"Russia said from the start that it would not only sign a contract but see it though," Putin said in Tehran, Iran. "We are not going to go back on our commitment."

Russia’s Atomstroyexport is building the plant, which is the focus of much international attention because of Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons program. The fate of the project has been uncertain, however, due to a funding dispute.

Last year Russia said Iran hadn’t completed payments and Tehran accused Moscow of stalling tactics. Putin blamed the delays on technical and legal glitches.

"At the start of the construction, we received German equipment, which is obviously outdated," he said.

"In addition, there are certain legal provisions in the (Russian-Iranian) contract that have to be revised and amended."

He also said Russia would supply fuel to Bushehr once a commissioning date is set.
