Ukraine vows secure supplies to Europe

VILNIUS, Lithuania, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Ukraine on Thursday guaranteed prompt gas and oil supplies to Europe amid concerns another spat with Gazprom could lead to reduced supplies.

"Our state guarantees the safe, timely and full implementation of commitments on the transit of oil and gas across the territory of Ukraine," President Viktor Yushchenko said Thursday in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The comments were reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

The comments come as a spat between Gazprom, the Russian gas monopolist, and Ukraine over a more than $1 billion debt appears to have been resolved. Gazprom said Ukrainian customers owed it money and threatened to cut off supplies to Ukraine unless the debt was paid.

Gazprom cut off supplies to Ukraine in December 2005 over a pricing dispute; the move led to reduced supplies across Europe.
