Petronet to use Shell LNG

NEW DELHI, July 13 (UPI) -- Petronet LNG of India says it will use Shell's regasification terminal at Hazira to gasify liquefied natural gas being imported for the Dabhol power plant.

The company will buy LNG from Shell's terminal, though two of its plants are running at full capacity.

Petronet LNG, which is owned by state-run Gas Authority of India Ltd., Oil and Natural Gas Corp., Indian Oil Corp. and Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd., has a 6.5 ton per annum capacity plant at Dahej in Gujarat.

Petronet LNG's Dahej plant has the capacity to feed two of three units of the Dabhol power plant.

"The third block at Dabhol power plant is likely to be operational in January 2008. We would not have the capacity to gasify the LNG meant for that block till the expansion of our Dahej terminal," said Prasod Dasgupta, managing director of Petronet LNG.

He said Shell's 2.5 million ton per annum terminal is also linked to the Dahej-Uran pipeline, which connects to the Panvel-Dabhol pipeline that would supply LNG to Dabhol power project.

"We have not yet been approached. However, no one can deny the use of facility if we have the capacity to spare," a Shell representative said.

Petronet has said it has plans to expand its terminal to 10 mtpa by mid-2008.

"We will be able to regasify the LNG meant for Dabhol once the expansion is completed. We will need to use the Shell facility for about six months," Dasgupta said.
