Power firms, states to eye RIL gas block

NEW DELHI, June 6 (UPI) -- India's power firms and various state governments have sought to buy gas from Reliance Industries Ltd.'s D-6 block in the Krishna-Godavari basin.

India's gas-starved fertilizer sector says it could increase the production of fertilizer provided the gas is made available to it from RIL's block.

Similarly, the government of Maharashtra state, which has made all-out efforts to meet the shortage of power, has asked the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry to expand the 1,040 megawatt Uran project.

Other states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh have also written similar letters to the ministry. They have also approached RIL, The Financial Express newspaper reported Wednesday.

Fertilizer and Chemical Minister Ramvilas Paswan urged Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora to ensure adequate gas was supplied to the fertilizer sector from RIL's D-6 block at a reasonable price.

RIL has invited price quotations from a large number of fertilizer companies for the sale of natural gas and said the pricing would be critical and needs to consider the views of all stakeholders.
