Kuwait finds new oil and gas field

KUWAIT CITY, April 30 (UPI) -- Kuwait claims another strike in its search for more oil, which would further bolster its role in the global oil sector.

Ali al-Jarrah al-Sabah, Kuwait's minister of oil, said Monday a large oil field was found in the north of the country.

Sabah wouldn't reveal details of the find, however, but said it "will have great positive impact on the country's oil strategy."

Kuwait produces about 2.4 million barrels per day and has about 101 billion barrels of reserves. It is the 11th-largest producer in the world and the seventh-largest exporter, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the data arm of the Energy Department.

The state-run KUNA news agency says the newfound field has light oil and affiliate gas and is the sixth such major discovery in the north of the country.
