SamoaFiber seeks Peru OK for bio-oil work

MEQUON, Wis., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Mequon, Wis.- based SamoaFiber Holdings said it is obtaining Peruvian approval to increase bio-oil operations in the east of the country.

The company hopes cana brava, a local plant, would both provide electrical energy to the region and support Peru's economy.

The Loreto region has been "coordinating with the national Executive (power) the start of an ambitious project aimed at producing bio-oil from the industrialization of cana brava (gynerium sagitatum), or SamoaFiber, which grows wildly throughout the Amazonian flood lands," said the region's President Ivan Vasquez after a meeting in Peru with SamoaFiber Holdings' Chief Executive Officer William L. New and other company executives.

The comments were reported by the RenewableEnergyAcess Web site on Friday.

"The cana brava plant can turn 80 percent of its biomass into bio-oil, a product that will be exported bringing revenue to the country," Peruvian President Alan Garcia said.

Vasquez said SamoaFiber Holdings had a 2 million ton per annum request of bio-oil for export to European and Asian markets.
