India seeks EU backing of nuclear energy

HELSINKI, Finland, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday sought support from the European Union to pursue nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

New Delhi has made it clear that it does not want "further erosion" of the non-proliferation regime, ZeeNews.com reported.

"We hope that the European Union will be in a position to support forward-looking approaches to enhance international cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. This will enable countries like India to expand the share of nuclear energy in their national energy baskets," said Singh, addressing the India-EU summit in Helsinki.

Singh spoke before the 45-member Nuclear Suppliers Group to reiterate his country's stance on pursuing nuclear energy in a peaceful manner, while working with like-minded countries to expand cooperation.

Finland, which is expected to take over the EU presidency in January, said Thursday the 25-member bloc has not yet made a decision to support India in getting access to civilian nuclear technology and fuel.

India is a member of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Project, joining partner nations like the United States, the EU, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia.
