Iran backs nuclear power in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- The Iranian government Wednesday threw its support to Indonesia to develop nuclear power as an alternative energy source.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Behurz Kamal Vandi said the development of nuclear energy is vital to meet the country's energy demand, Indonesian National News Agency reported.

"It is important in the future as an alternative energy source for the Indonesian people, and the question now is how to convince the government about its safety," the Iranian envoy said.

Vandi noted that Indonesia was ready to develop nuclear energy. It is expected to take about six years for the country to build a nuclear power plant.
