NEW DELHI, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- India is planning a cap on the number of big power projects awarded to a single entity.
The proposed limits came after a number of companies petitioned Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde for such a limit, the Power Ministry said.
Ministry officials said there were fears within government and industry over the capability of a single entity to manage multiple projects of considerable technological complexity. Many companies also expressed fears of such a company gaining monopoly status, The Telegraph newspaper said Friday.
The power industry says it is not right to discriminate against big operators vis-a-vis smaller ones on the grounds of their ability to handle many large projects. They proposed stricter prequalification criteria for a company bidding for more than one project.
Of the nine projects, the government awarded the Mundra project in Gujarat to Tata Power and Sasan to Reliance Power.
