Toddler dies in drive-by shooting

MIAMI, Aug. 20 -- Police searched for at least five Latin teenagers Sunday believed responsible for a drive-by shooting that killed a 3-year-old boy and slightly wounded two adults. Authorities believed the gunmen may have been trying to kill a rival gang member who had been playing basketball in a park in the city's Little Havana section.

Investigators have questioned one of those wounded, Cesar Reyes, about the shooting, saying he may have been the intended target. 'This may be a gang-related shooting. We think they may have targeted Reyes,' police spokesman Delrish Ross said. Also shot was Eva Ramirez, standing near Reyes, her sister-in-law Jamely Ramirez, and nephew Bernabe, 3. The toddler was killed by a bullet that hit him in the chest. Eva Ramirez was in good condition following surgery to remove slugs from her hand and leg. Bernabe's mother was not injured. According to witnesses, a white car cruised past Riverside Park in the Little Havana neighborhood and its occupants opened fire with a shotgun and at least one pistol. Reyes ran from the park after the shooting, but collapsed a few blocks away and was taken to a hospital for treatment of his wounds. He was in good condition Sunday. Bernabe Ramirez is the second young child killed by random shots in Miami this year. In June, Keyon Octavius Davis was killed when he was caught in the middle of a shootout in a south Dade County park.
