Yuasa Battery buys Exide's industrial division

READING, Pa. -- Japan's Yuasa Battery Company Ltd. announced Tuesday it had purchased Exide Corporation's industrial division, a leading manufacturer and marketer of industrial batteries and chargers. Terms were not disclosed.

The agreement includes the acquisition of three battery manufacturing plants in Sumter, S.C., Richmond, Ky. and Cleveland.

The company announced its U.S. subsidiary, Yuasa Battery (America) Inc., will be consolidated with Exide industrial division to form the new company, Yuasa-Exide Inc. The concern, which will be based in Reading, will provide a complete range of energy products for the industrial battery market.

Company President Teruhisa Yuasa named Exide Executive Vice President P. Michael Ehlerman to head the new company.

'This new enterprise strengthens our commitment to our customers by bringing them an organization totally dedicated to meeting our future energy requirements,' Yuasa said.

Founded in Japan in 1918, Yuasa Battery is a leading manufacturer and distributer of high-performance batteries for a wide range of industrial, automotive, motorcycle and electronics products. Yuasa operates 22 planst and sales offices in 18 countries.
