LOS ANGELES -- News anchorman Jerry Dunphy, shot in an ambush outside his television station 12 days ago, has been released from Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and said Thursday he will proceed with his life without fear.

Dunphy, 62, anchor of Los Angeles' top-rated newscast at KABC, was released from the hospital Tuesday in good condition, less than a week after he underwent successful surgery for removal of the bullet fired into his neck.

He was also wounded in the arm.

At the time of the operation, doctors had said Dunphy could return to work in a few weeks.

Dunphy and KABC makeup artist Sandra Marshall were attacked Oct. 24 as they were driving back to the station after dinner to prepare for the 11 p.m. newscast.

In a KABC interview, Dunphy said, 'There are some things in your life you can't protect yourself against. You can't walk around living a life in fear.

'We (news personalities) are subject to the same terrorism, the same craziness, the same fun, the good life and bad life as everybody else out there.'

Four gunmen drove up alongside Dunphy's silver-blue Rolls-Royce at a stop sign outside the ABC Television Center in Hollywood and opened fire, wounding the pair.

Ms. Marshall, 36, was shot in the arm. She was released from the hospital last week.

The assailants fled and remain at large. KABC has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to their arrest and conviction. Police investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting, which they say could have been a random street gang attack or a contract 'hit.'
