Nicknamed "Shotgun", Rogers was involved in an incident in 1916 in which he accidentally killed an opposing batter. While playing for the Minor League Nashville Vols, Rogers hit Johnny Dodge, a longtime friend who was playing for the Mobile Sea Gulls, with a pitch, killing him.
