Wiki

Richard Burthogge (1638-1698) was an English physician and philosopher.

He was born in Plymouth, and went to school at Exeter grammar school. He studied at All Souls College, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. in 1658. He then spent time at the University of Leiden, where he probably came under the influence of the philosopher Arnold Geulincx, and graduated M.D. in 1662. He practiced medicine in Bowden, Devon.

In his philosophical and theological writings he was a critic in some matters of John Locke, but generally a supporter, and an advocate of religious toleration. His epistomology was empiricist, and he opposed innate ideas. His metaphysics was distinctive, but not completely worked out.
