MARONDERA, Zimbabwe, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe threw himself a $1 million 90th birthday bash while most of his people struggle to live on less than $2 a day.
45,000 guests joined Mugabe at a soccer stadium just outside the capital where he said cheerfully, "I feel as youthful and energetic as a boy of nine." The party had five cakes, one of them weighing 200 pounds. 90 cows were killed for the event.
Onlookers and children waved traditional red scarves as Mugabe rode through town in the back of a truck and gave his usual close-fisted salute. At the celebration he addressed his guests and touched on a number of things: homosexuality is not tolerated in Zimbabwe, his birthday brought rain to the drought-ridden land, and that he was no where close to retiring,
Mugabe has led the country since 1980, and this latest term will keep him in office until he is 94.
