Kickstarter says credit card data is safe after hack

NEW YORK, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Crowdfunding site Kickstarter said they were hacked last Wednesday, but reassured users that sensitive credit card information was safe.

They have asked users to change their passwords after hackers gained access to user data, but that there was no sign of foul play except in two accounts. Kickstarter is in touch with the two users and have helped them secure their accounts.

Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler took to the company's blog to inform users of the security breach and said that the breach was dealt with immediately. The company was initially alerted to the breach by law enforcement officials. Information accessed by the hackers includes usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers and encrypted passwords.

Strickler wrote that while password information accessed was encrypted, "a malicious person with enough computing power to guess and crack an encrypted password, particularly a weak or obvious one," could access that information.

As of Sunday morning, the company had received more than 5,000 user requests regarding the breach. The hack comes close on the heels of a massive hack that compromised payment cards used by Target shoppers and another hack of retailer Neiman Marcus.

Kickstarter is a service that allows startups to raise money for their projects on the website, with the company receiving a 5 percent cut of the funds collected.
