LOS ANGELES, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Morgan Creek Productions' Tupac Shakur biopic has been a long time in the making, but at least they've finally signed a director.

John Singleton, who directed Shakur in the 1993 film, Poetic Justice, returned to the project after stepping away from it two years ago. The Oscar-nominated Boyz n the Hood director has always wanted to tell Shakur's story on film, and will rewrite, direct and produce the biopic.

“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” Singleton said in a statement. “His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation.”

Shakur's mother, Afeni, is one of the film's executive producers, though her battle with Morgan Creek over creative control has delayed the film.

Shakur, an assumed casualty of the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry, died in 1996 after a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. His murder is still unsolved. [Variety, MTV News]
