Serena Williams withdraws from BNP Paribas Open

Serena Williams pulls out of two competitions due to back injury sustained at Australian Open.

Feb. 8 (UPI) -- One day after withdrawing from the Qatar Open citing a back injury, tennis player Serena Williams announced she also won't play in the BNP Paribas Open in California.

Williams said she won't play at either event after sustaining a back injury during the Australian Open.

She had left her name on the preliminary entry list for the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., but withdrew Friday.

“After careful consideration, I will not return to the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open this year," Williams said. "I send my best wishes to everyone involved in the tournament."
