SEOUL, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- North and South Korea agreed Wednesday to host a new round of family reunions in late February, the first such reunions since October 2010.
The latest round of reunions are scheduled to be held from February 20-25 at the Mount Kumgang resort on North Korea's east coast.
The reunions are intended to reunite families separated by the 1950-1953 Korean War.
In late January, North Korea's National Defense Commission penned a friendly letter to South Korea seeking inter-Korean dialogue and to "reenergize multi-faceted north-south cooperation and exchanges." Pyongyang's conciliatory outreach was in sharp contrast to an aggressive threat issued earlier in January, warning the U.S. and South Korea to cancel joint military exercises of else face "unimaginable calamities and disasters."
February's planned family reunions coincide with the U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises.
