Jimmy Fallon writes thank-you notes to Jay Leno [VIDEO]

Jimmy Fallon celebrated Jay Leno in a series of light-hearted thank-you notes to the departing "Tonight Show" host.

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- NBC's late-night transitions are famously contentious, while Jay Leno has taken most of the flack for his tight grip on the Tonight Show gig. He even told 60 Minutes last month that he had no desire to retire, but said he could understand why the network would move in favor of the younger, defiantly enthusiastic Jimmy Fallon.

But none of that drama appeared onstage Monday night, when Fallon sat down with Leno for a "passing of the torch" interview. It's Leno's last week on the show, so Fallon wrote him a few thank-you notes to send him off.

"Thank you, Jay, for teaching me how to be a late-night host. But was it really necessary for me to 'wax on, wax off' your entire car collection?" he said.

Most of the notes were jokey one-liners, but Fallon's final thank-you was characteristically humble and gracious.

"Finally, thank you Jay Leno, for carrying on the proud tradition of the Tonight Show host with such humor and class and for being nothing but gracious and generous to me over the past years. I will do my best to make you proud every single night," Fallon said.
