J.K. Rowling: Hermione Granger should have married Harry Potter, not Ron Weasley

LONDON, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- In news that will devastate Ron/Hermione shippers -- but delight Harry/Hermione shippers -- J.K. Rowling has said that she regrets pairing Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger at the end of the Harry Potter series.

In a recent interview for a Wonderland magazine issue guest-edited by Hermione herself, Emma Watson, Rowling said that she paired Ron and Hermione for personal reasons that didn't necessarily make sense for the characters.

Britain's Sunday Times printed excerpts of the interview ahead of the magazine's Thursday debut.

"I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That's how it was conceived, really," Rowling told Watson. "For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron."

“I know, I’m sorry,” she said of the bombshell. “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

At least Watson didn't seem too hurt by the revelations.

“I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy," the actress said.

For the uninitiated, Harry Potter ends up married to Ron Weasley's sister, Ginny, in the epilogue of the seventh and final Harry Potter book, The Deathly Hallows. Ron marries Hermione.
