An Iranian diplomat was shot and killed Saturday outside the Iranian ambassador's residence in Sana'a.

Gunmen, driving a Toyota Hilux, blocked Iranian diplomat Abolqassem Assadi's car as he was leaving the ambassador's house in the Hadda neighborhood, one of the most secure areas in Yemen. Assadi was shot three times.

Iranian state news reported that the assailants had planned to kidnap the diplomat but killed Assadi when he resisted. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzyieh Afkham said that, in dying, Assadi attained "martyrdom."

Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr Al-Qirbi responded to the attack: "Security forces will do its [duty] to ensure the criminals are brought to justice."

Assadi was in charge of financial affairs at the Iranian Embassy in Sana'a.
