The dress Hayden Panettiere wore to the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday was quite controversial. Not because of how she looked in it -- she was stunning -- but because of how she got it.

While celebrities often borrow designer's gowns for award shows, the 24-year-old actress bought hers off the rack.

"[It's] Tom Ford. It's the first time I've ever worn him, because I've been begging," the Nashville star told Julianna Rancic when asked about her dress. "I feel sexy in it, I feel comfortable in it, and I'm in Tom Ford. I would wear a plastic bag if it was designed by him."

Panettiere's comments were quickly picked up by journalist Jim Shi who explained on Twitter that -- as per usual -- Tom Ford had only dressed Naomi Watts for Sunday's award show.

"Tom Ford confirms to me he ONLY dressed #NaomiWatts tonight. Hayden Panettiere BOUGHT her Tom Ford dress at RETAIL. Tsk, tsk," Shi wrote.

Either way, Ford most have found Panettiere's comments so gracious that he decided to send her a bouquet of white flowers and a note to thank her. The actress shared the designer's gift with her fans on Twitter.
