Nadya Suleman charged with welfare fraud

Nadya Suleman, the woman best known as "Octomom" for giving birth to octuplets in 2009, has been charged with welfare fraud after filing for public assistance.

Suleman, whose real name is Natalie Denise Suleman, applied for public assistance in Lancaster, Calif., in January of last year. She is accused of failing to report nearly $30,000 in earnings, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said.

“While applying for public aid, the mother of 14 children allegedly failed to disclose that she was also getting checks for personal appearances and residuals from videos," the office said. "She allegedly failed to report the extra income she earned between Jan. 1, 2013, and June 30, 2013."

Suleman, 38, filed for bankruptcy after struggling to care for her 14 children, resorting to such unsavory money-making schemes such as porn, nude photography and online date auctions.

She will be arraigned Friday, and bail is expected to be set at $25,000. She faces more than five years in jail if convicted.
