Libyan deputy minister assassinated in Sirte

A Libyan deputy minister was assassinated Saturday outside a market in his hometown of Sirte by unknown assailants.

Libyan Deputy Minster of Industry Hassan Al-Darole was assassinated in the Mediterranean city of Sirte on Saturday.

Tripoli Security Directorate's media coordinator Essam Naas said that the killing occurred near a marketplace after prayers. Unidentified gunmen opened fire and, according to a Ministry of Defense official, Al-Darole was killed instantly.

Al-Darole previously served as a representative from Sirte to the National Transitional Council following the revolution in 2011 that overthrew the late dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Sirte is a city mid-way between Tripoli and Benghazi.
