Calif. congressman files for reelection in wrong district

Rep. Ed Royce accidentally filed for reelection in the district he used to represent before the electoral map was redrawn.

This won't go over well with the constituents!

Longtime California Congressman Ed Royce filed for reelection last week, but instead of listing the 39th District, which he represents, he listed the 40th.

The mistake appears to be an honest one: Until 2010, the 40th District was indeed Royce's heavily Repbulican Orange County territory, until the electoral map was redrawn. The new 40th district, represented by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, features a 47-point Democratic advantage.

"He's running in the 39th" said Royce consultant Dave Gilliard, adding that the candidate had amended his paperwork on Friday.

Royce easily won re-election in 2012 in the 39th, handily defeating Democrat Jay Chen. He has represented northern Orange County since he was first elected -- to another version of the 39th District -- in 1993.
