Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Two people died and two people were injured when an unidentified gunman opened fire at the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., on Tuesday afternoon.

The gunman started shooting when he entered a professional office building at the northeast corner the hospital, killing one person and injuring two others before he turned the gun on himself.

“This man came through the door into the waiting room with [a gun] at his side,” an eyewitness told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “He pointed it at me and then he brandished it at everyone else that was sitting against the wall and he said something like, ‘everybody get out of here,’ or ‘you’d all better get out of here.’ Then he opened the door to go back to where the doctor and the nurses were.”

She described the shooter as a tall white man.

"There were police everywhere," a spokeswoman for the city of Reno told the Los Angeles Times. "The Reno police are being assisted by law enforcement from around the area. There were police cars everywhere."

A Department of Public Safety rep told reporters that one of the victims was a female doctor.

An ophthalmic technician who heard the shooting from the floor below said police responded quickly and efficiently to the emergency. She said officers escorted staff and patients to safety, asked them a few questions then let them leave after 45 minutes.

"The police handled it in the best way possible," the technician said. "They were very professional and calm. Everyone [in the office] stayed pretty calm."

"We have returned to normal business operations," the hospital tweeted Tuesday night. "However, everyone is encouraged to avoid the NE corner of the hospital campus."
