'Ironside' actor Don Mitchell dies at 70

The actor originated the role of Mark Sanger, opposite the titular wheelchair-bound detective played by Raymond Burr in "Ironside."

Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Don Mitchell, the actor best known for playing opposite Raymond Burr's wheelchair-bound detective in the original NBC series Ironside, died Sunday at the age of 70.

He appeared in the blaxploitation film Scream Blacula Scream with Pam Grier and had roles on I Dream of Jeannie, The Fugitive and the CBS daytime soap Capitol.

Mitchell died of natural causes at his home in Encino, Calif. He had three daughters, Dawn Mitchell, Julia Pace Mitchell and Shawn Meshelle Mitchell.
