Biden arrived in Beijing a day after meetings in Tokyo, where he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to urge dialogue amid growing tensions after China declared ownership of Japanese contested airspace over the East China Sea as part of its new Air Defense Identification Zone. While in Tokyo, Biden declared his intention to raise American's concern over the new ADIZ with the Chinese president.

Details of the issues discussed during Biden's meeting with the Chinese president have not yet been made public.

In prepared remarks concluding their meeting, Biden stated that America's relationship with the U.S. “ultimately has to be based on trust, and a positive notion about the motive of one another."
