Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Jared Leto stepped onstage at the IFP Gotham Awards Monday night to pick up Matthew McConaughey's Best Actor award for Dallas Buyers Club.

Leto explained that his costar couldn't attend the ceremony, because "he's got a f***ing job, guys." But he did manage to get the 44-year-old actor on speaker phone to accept the award.

"I am not Matthew McConaughey," Leto said. "But we have some technology at work here, it is called the iPhone, and we have Mr. McConaughey on the phone right now. He just said, 'All right, all right, all right.'"

After deciding that it was too hard to hear him on speaker phone, Leto relayed a few messages from his friend.

"One last thing on behalf of Matthew, he says he loves you, you look great, you're a very sexy crowd, he loves New York City, and just keep living. He's laughing."
