Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Mary Byler, 34, and her 11-year-old daughter died in Mercer County, Penn., on Saturday when a semi truck hit their horse-drawn buggy from behind.

“It was a real loud bang,” said resident and witness Matt McFarland. “You couldn't tell it was an Amish buggy. There were pieces scattered everywhere.”

The horse was so severely injured in the accident that it was put down.

Unidentified individuals in the semi truck did not appear to be injured in the accident.
