Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Justin Bieber addressed all the shenanigans that led to rumors of a mental breakdown with The Hollywood Reporter during his first official interview in nine months.

The 19-year-old singer explained that he simply doesn't "give a [expletive]" about media critics.

"Not 'I don't give a [expletive]' to just be reckless and do whatever, but 'I don't give a [expletive] what they say,'" he explaines. "I know who I am and what I'm doing in my life and what I've accomplished and continue to accomplish as a performer, as a writer, as an artist, as a person, as a human being. I'm happy with the man I'm becoming."

The "Boyfriend" singer added that the intense media coverage he gets is just a selfish plot for the press to make money.

“When people see a negative thing about me on a magazine, they’re gonna buy it,” he said.

“Every time some site writes something bad, all my followers go on there, and it brings them more traffic. Now they have all the Beliebers on their site, which gives them money from advertisers. They’re just worried about money. They don’t care about ruining someone’s name.”

Last week, the "As Long as You Love Me" star made headlines for disrespecting the Argentine flag during the first two of his scheduled performances in Buenos Aires. Earlier this month the singer was charged with vandalism for a "racist" monkey graffiti he painted on a wall in Rio de Janeiro and in late October he raised eyebrows after getting caught on camera spray painting yet another wall in Colombia. But according to his manager Scooter Braun, Bieber is just a boy being a boy.

"He's the only person in humanity who's grown up the way he has -- with smartphones and cameras on him 24/7," Braun explains. "Another kid can go out and have a good night on the town, and no one gives a crap, but Justin is the most Googled person on the planet -- for four years straight!"

The singer admitted that media scrutiny had made him more cautious about the people he surrounds himself with.

“I trust my mom and dad. I trust Scooter with my career. He’s always made sure I’m taken care of,” he said. “That’s it.”

Canadian rapper Drake and Will Smith also have an influence on the young performer. The latter reportedly has weekly calls with Bieber in which they go over "potential issues, emotional or otherwise."

“Drake is like a big brother to Justin,” Braun told THP. “And Justin really looks up to Drake. They have an extremely special relationship.”

As for his upcoming music, Bieber disclosed he's going for a more R&B sound. “I was going for a modern Boyz II Men sound,” he said of his newest track, a ballad called "PYD."

"Michael Jackson didn’t do ‘Off the Wall’ until he was about 23,” Bieber said of the King of Pop’s legendary album. “‘Bad,’ not until he was, like 25 [Jackson was 29]. I have all the time in the world. Justin’s ‘Thriller’ is yet to come.”
