Liberty University officials said Hathaway attacked a campus police officer, who was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of his injuries and later released.

The university said there was no ongoing concern for the safety of students and classes were to continue as scheduled.

"The Liberty University community is deeply saddened by this tragic event and is prayerfully supporting all those impacted," said LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. in a statement.
