(UPI) -- The world's largest fancy vivid orange diamond ("by far," according to Christie's) sold at auction in Geneva for a whopping $35.5 million on Tuesday.

The 14.82-carat pear-shaped jewel exceeded its estimated sale price of $21 million, setting a world record for the whole purchase as well as its price per carat.

"As far as orange diamonds go, it has no peer,” a diamond consultant told Bloomberg before the auction.

“The 14.82-carat orange diamond is one such a stone, a rare gem, which will perhaps only be seen once in a lifetime," said Christie’s Jewellery head François Curiel.
