Carlos Beltran day to day after rib injury

(UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran left Game 1 of the World Series during the third inning over a severe right rib bruise.

The Puerto Rican outfielder was taken to a local hospital in Boston after he collided against a wall at Fenway Park while catching what would have been a gran slam by David Ortiz. The clash took place in the bottom of the second inning and allowed the Cardinals to stay within five runs of the Red Sox rather than go into an 8-0 deficit.

X-rays and a CT scan results came out negative, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. He added that the player would be "day to day" and that he had "severe bruising."

Beltran struck out at bat on Wednesday but owns a .256/.383/.538 line in 47 plate appearances this postseason. His .724 slugging percentage in playoff games is the third highest in Major League Baseball history.

He was replaced in the lineup by Jon Jay, who took center field while Shane Robinson moved to Beltran's spot in right field.
