(UPI) -- It's been a rough few years for Steve Rogers since he woke up from his 70-year nap to the events that brought on the Battle of New York in The Avengers.

In the first trailer released for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we find Steve (Chris Evans) two years on from that devastation, and like Tony Stark in Iron Man 3 earlier this year, he's still struggling to shake its effects.

The Cap has thrown himself into his work with the alien-fighting secret organization S.H.I.E.L.D., but he's finding it hard to grapple with the ethical questions of the group's mission.

As for the Winter Soldier himself, Steve's best friend-turned-brainwashed assassin Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) makes a brief appearance near the end of the trailer, sandwiched in among a series of heavy action shots so he's almost missed.

Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson return as Nick Fury and Natasha Romanoff, and Hayley Atwell and Cobie Smulders are also slated to appear in the movie as their Captain America: The First Avenger characters Peggy Carter and Agent Maria Hill.

Anthony Mackie joins the cast as Captain America's new sidekick Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, Emily VanCamp steps into the role of Agent 13 Sharon Carter and Robert Redford plays senior S.H.I.E.L.D. officer Alexander Pierce.
