Carol Burnett receives Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

(UPI) -- Carol Burnett was the recipient of the top humor prize in the United States Sunday.

The television icon was awarded the 16th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at a ceremony that took place at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

"From her television program and appearances, as well as her performances on Broadway and in film, Carol Burnett has entertained generations of fans with her vibrant wit and hilarious characters," Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein said in a statement. "We are delighted to pay tribute to this unique and beloved entertainer."

The award show, which took place in the Concert Hall, featured special appearances by Julie Andrews, Lucie Arnaz, Tony Bennett, Tim Conway, Tina Fey, Rashida Jones, Vicki Lawrence, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Bruce Vilanch, Rosemary Watson and others.

"I can't believe I'm getting a humor prize from the Kennedy Center. It's almost impossible to be funnier than the people in Washington," Burnett said upon learning about the honor.

Burnett, 80, is best known for her role in The Carol Burnett Show, a variety series that ran for 11 years averaging 30 million viewers per week. The show received 25 Emmy Awards.
