The first lady had previously planned attend fundraisers in Los Angeles and the Bay Area benefiting this Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee this weekend.

But according to multiple media reports, the first lady's advisors felt that it would look unseemly for her to attend swanky soirees -- at which guests could pay up to $32,000 a plate -- when the shutdown has prevented government workers from receiving paychecks.

Obama's events included a dinner at the Los Angeles home of "Everybody Loves Raymond" creator Philip Rosenthal and a "Women's Brunch" fundraiser with Nancy Pelosi at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.
