Domestic violence sign gets Texas bar employee fired

Domestic violence jokes don't make for great advertisements -- especially during Domestic Violence Awareness Month -- as one bar employee in Austin, Texas learned over the weekend.

An Austin resident walking by Minibar noticed a sidewalk sign that read: "I like my beer like I like my violence: Domestic."

A photo of the offending sign went viral when it hit Reddit -- where users noted that it was written alongside imported beer advertising -- and came to the attention of national news media. Seetha Kulandaisamy, who claims she took the viral photo, said she happens to volunteer at an Austin women's shelter but thinks her reaction "would have been the same regardless."

“I walked by the sign on Friday night, and my first response was just anger,” Kulandaisamy told ABC News. "Not only was it offensive, but it was also just bad humor.”

Minibar owner Alex Elmiger said the sign was the work of a single employee who had since been fired. Minibar put out a new sign that promised to donate $1 of every beer sold to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

"I assure everyone yesterday was an isolated incident and was definitely not a reflection of minibar what so ever," Elmiger wrote on Facebook.

Kulandaisamy said on Facebook that she was happy with Minibar's gesture.

Perhaps I am exceptionally sensitive to these issues but clearly there are a lot more people that care about these issues as well and, as a result, made that known when they called Minibar to voice their complaints,” Kulandaisamy said. “I truly appreciate the actions that the owner Alex has taken to make amends and hope to visit the establishment soon.”
