Detroit Lions' Nate Burleson crashes SUV, breaks arm saving falling pizza

Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson's season could be over after he broke his arm in two places crashing his SUV at about 2:25 a.m. Tuesday.

Burleson, 32, attempted to save a pizza from falling off the front seat when he lost control of his 2009 GMC Yukon and crashed into a median along an interstate in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills. He was on his way home from watching Monday Night Football with his teammates at the time of the accident.

Police say alcohol was not a factor, but distracted driving was, though they did not cite him for a moving violation.

Burleson, who was wearing his seatbelt, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he is scheduled for surgery today.

Burleson had his best game with the Lions in Sunday’s 27-20 win at Washington. He caught six passes for 116 yards -- his most since 2007. He led the Lions this season with 19 catches through three games.

Burleson missed most of last season due to a broken leg, and the Lions lost eight of ten games after his injury last year.

The Lions will play Ryan Broyles, who is recovering from his second torn ACL in two years, in their No. 1 slot.

“Every time he’s gone in the game for us, he’s made plays," coach Jim Schwartz said of Broyles. "Every day, he gets a little bit better, and every day, he gets a little bit more into the groove physically and mentally and things like that. It’s a long road back."
