Stock market drops from high as shutdown looms

The Dow Jones Average and Standard & Poor Index both fell Friday to finish the week on news the Federal Reserve planned to make cuts to stimulus spending and increasing fears of a government shutdown.

The S&P 500 dropped 0.7 percent to 1,709.69, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 171.18 points, or 1.1 percent to to 15,465.37. The losses were the biggest in a month, but the dow still finished up 0.5 percent on the week.
