Jessica Lynch, 10 years after rescue, still in pain

It's been more than 10 years since the horrific kidnapping and the dramatic rescue of Jessica Lynch in the earliest days of the Iraq war.

Lynch's unit was ambushed three days after the war began on March 23, 2003. She was taken captive, badly injured and raped, and held hostage for nine days. She was just 19 years old.

Even after a decade, it's an experience Lynch says stays with her all the time.

"It's an everyday remembering," she said. "I mean I wake up, and I look at the injuries. Putting on the brace in the morning -- you know all of that takes me back to that day."

"But I do. I wake up, I think to myself, 'you know what, I'm so lucky and blessed to have gotten to come home and rescued and made it out of there alive,'" she said.

Now a mother to a six-year-old son, Lynch says she is still angry with the way she felt used by the Bush administration, who she says exaggerated her rescue for political reasons.

"I knew that, even ten years later, I would not have been able to live with myself knowing that I let those stories escalate and I went along with what those other people were saying, because I knew in my heart that that's not really what happened," she said.

In 2011, Lynch graduated from the University of Wester Virginia at Parksburg, and is now a substitute teacher. She is working on a Masters in communications and hopes to someday earn a doctorate.

"I always like to set these small goals for myself, I like to have something to look forward to, and, I don't know -- that's what gives me the drive and the ambition," she said.
