Executives had faith that "Insidious 2" would perform well on a weekend that kicked off with Friday the 13th, but the low-budget horror flick soared past expectations and topped the box office with a $41.1 million weekend gross.

Though the sequel's intake flattened over the weekend, the film still made 8.2 times its $5 million budget in just three days, becoming September's second-biggest premiere. (The first "Insidious" installment only earned 13.3 million in 2010.)

Robert De Niro starred in the weekend's second highest grossing film, "The Family," a poorly reviewed comedy about a mafia family in a witness protection program.
