It's gotten mediocre reviews, but Matt Damon's new sci-fi vehicle, "Elysium," was the undisputed box office winner, taking in a respectable $30.5 million between Friday and Sunday.

The Jason Sukeiks and Jennifer Aniston's dope smugglers wrangled $26.6 million and the relatively inexpensive "Planes" earned $22.5 million in its opening weekend, while "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" opened to a disappointing $14.5 million.

"Elysium," written and directed by Neill Blomkamp of "District 9," lacked the buzz earned by its out-of-nowhere predecessor, but with Damon and Jodie Foster's star power, and an encouraging $10.9 million in 17 foreign markets, could pick up momentum.

Meanwhile, the inexpensive "Millers" has, in just five days, already made the $38 million it cost to produce, despite a critical panning.
