Cousin of Aaron Hernandez in custody for refusing to testify

By CAROLINE LEE, UPI.com

A cousin of Aaron Hernandez has been held since August 1 at a Massachusetts correctional facility for refusing to testify at the state's hearing for the murder case against Hernandez.

Tanya Cummings-Singleton was subpoenaed to appear before the jury. When she refused, the judge held her in contempt.

Cummings-Singleton has a few connection to the case. Prosecutors said that after the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, co-defendants Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace drove to the home of Hernandez's uncle Thaddeus Singleton, where Cummings-Singleton, 37, lives.

Their house has been searched several times by police. Cummings-Singleton is also reported to have purchased the bus ticket to Florida for Wallace.

The phone used by Wallace on the night of the murder, which police are still searching for, is registered to Cummings-Singleton. Authorities have tried to speak to Singleton, but found he was killed in a single-car crash June 30.
