Mount Hood snowboarder's body found after ice tunnel collapse buried him alive

By KATE STANTON, UPI.com

Rescuers have recovered the body of Collin Backowski, a 25-year-old snowboarder from Pines, Colo., who was found under 8 to 10 feet of ice and snow on Oregon's Mount Hood Sunday.

Backowski and five other snowboarders aged 24 to 29 were looking for a place to film Saturday when they walked into a tunnel of ice that collapsed on them. Though Backowski was trapped under a large block of ice, the other men were able to escape and contact authorities.

Rescue teams used chainsaws and other tools to cut through the ice, though Sgt. Pete Hughes, of Hood River County Sheriff's Office, said they didn't expect to find him alive.

High Cascade Snowboard Camp, where Backowski worked as a coach, said in a Facebook post that they were "deeply saddened" by his death. They added that grief counselors would be made available to staff and campers.
